Health Insurance Policy

I have no idea why the rates on my health insurance policy keep going up. At one time both my husband and I were covered on his insurance, and we had a very low deductible. Now, about five years later, he is being charged for some of the monthly bill –which is taken straight from his paycheck- and our deductible has doubled. Unless we were to have a major catastrophe, the company that insures us is making out like a bandit. Not only that, because everything is so confusing, I don’t even know what I am covered for and what I would have to pay for myself.

When I have questions about my health insurance policy, I know I have to carve an entire day from my schedule just to get it figured out. I try to find the answer in the booklets we have, but that never works. They word every health insurance policy in such a way that I’m sure the person who wrote it can no longer understand a word of it. It’s impossible to read, and I swear they do that on purpose.

The next step in trying to understand what is going on with my health insurance policy is to contact the company. I can never get through, and I end up calling my husband’s company so they can give me a better number. When I finally get the right number to call about my health insurance policy, I know I am going to be on hold for a long time. Usually the first person cannot help me, and I have to wait longer on hold for someone who supposedly can.

Usually, I do end up finally understanding what I need to know about my health insurance policy. I am usually disappointed, and I have no idea why we have this in the first place. They don’t cover much, and if they do cover something, they make darn sure you don’t stick around to heal properly. As I figure out more and more about my health insurance policy, I begin to wonder if they pay for anything, and why there are so many complaints about profit. They must be rolling in it, because I can’t see where they cover anything that I need. What is the point of paying for something each month that you can never use? I understand that if there were an accident or something, we will be glad we have it, but I’m not even sure they cover that.

It all comes down to doing your homework. Read and understand your policy. If you don't understand your coverage ask questions. Don't give up until you have the answers you need. I know it's frustrating. My wife works in the health insurance industry and she gets upset. It is not easy, but if you don't ask questions and get the answers you need the insurance companies will keep doing what they always... make more money.

If you can't get the answers you need then go to your state insurance commissioner. Insurance companies hate to hear from that organization.
